Life in the Eighties
The 80s was a great decade to grow up as a child. There are so many fond memories. Even today we talk a lot about the 80s. Many of us miss the decade very much. It was a great decade. We host 80s parties and nights, to relieve the nostalgia like wearing fancy dresses of pop idols and characters associated with the decade. Some people were wearing colourful and quirky 80s outfits in a recent event I attended, like Super Ted, Banaraman. There was a great nostalgic feeling to the enjoyable event. Love it.
My local high street at Stockton on Tees had a traditional toy shop Toymaster showing distinctive yellow background. The store stocked the latest crazes at the time, like Transformers, He-Man, Star Wars and much more. The queues were big when the latest crazes were launched . Children were begging their parents frantically to buy the item. It was absolute chaos in the store.
Me and my older brother had a separate Transformer sticker book. There was brotherly quarrel between us. In school, we swapped stickers with friends.
We had Woolworths who sold toys and of course pick & mixes. Time moves on as the once thriving retailer has vanished from the high street forever. Online shopping is very popular at present, almost destroying our high streets. Lot of other big name retailers are no longer with us like Debenhams.
Seeing the empty building on once was a flourishing retailer on the high street is very sad. I went shopping at Debenhams as a child in the decade and dined in their restaurant. I look back reflecting on those days with an expression of joy in my face. Memories always stay with you.
I watched the cartoons during the mornings and afternoons like Transformers, Dogtanian, Thundercats, He Man, Banaraman, Super ted and much more. My parents hosted children parties for me and my brother , hiring a DJ and a magician who did a ventriloquist act with a hideous looking rabbit.
The garage was turned into a disco floor, listening to party anthems like Superman by Black Lace. The children were clapping to the songs, whilst the parents socialised amongst themselves and enjoying the delights of the party. Those were the great the days.
Pop idols were huge in the decade. George Michael, Michael Jackson and Madonna all had a string of hits throughout the decade. Creativity in music started to grow as many artists and groups used music videos in their songs, going to the most challenging locations like deserts.
There were so many great bands of the 80s like Duran Duran, Madness, Queen, A-HA, Spandau Ballet and many more who delighted us with quality music that leaves a strong legacy. Live Aid was the biggest music event, attracting a large global audience supporting a charitable cause. Whilst working and on a car journey I listen to 80s music. So many timeless classics.
I want to look back at the good times of the decade. Every decade goes through tough times like we are experiencing currently with an unstable governments, Covid 19 and the cost of living crisis .The 80s did experience challenging times. I want to distance from the negativity. There is so much you can talk about the decade. It is better to focus on positive themes.
